Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (March 21, 2016) – Seth Bergman wrapped up the opening weekend of the season for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour with a podium finish.
Bergman placed second last Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, where he closed the weekend with momentum and dramatically improved on his result from the first race of the weekend.
“I’m happy because I feel like our race car has good speed and we know why,” he said. “We’re getting things where they need to be with our race program. If you’re going to be a championship contender you have to have reasons why you are fast and have things figured out. The DNF in Waco isn’t the best way to start the season, but if you’re going to be a champion you have to be able to overcome bad things.”
Bergman began the weekend last Thursday at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, by winning his heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That earned him a position in the feature redraw, where he pulled the second-highest number – seven – to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“I got a good start and two laps into it I was in fourth or fifth,” he said. “A car spun in front of me and I couldn’t avoid it. I clipped him and got upside down. We were on track for a solid podium and possibly a shot at a win. It’s frustrating to end the night like that.”
Bergman was unable to resume the race and he was credited with a 22nd-place finish.
However, the weekend concluded on a much better note. Following Friday’s rain out at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, Bergman capitalized on a good pill draw to kick off Saturday’s event at the unique half-mile oval.
“Saturday was pretty successful,” he said. “It was interesting because with ASCS this year there’s no provisionals. That makes things more interesting knowing you don’t have that cushion. And with 40 cars or more they have implemented a qualifier. We were fortunate I got a good draw, which helps you a lot at Devil’s Bowl.”
Bergman won his heat race from the pole position before he finished where he started – second – in a qualifier. That ranked him sixth in overall points heading into the main event.
“The car felt good all night,” he said. “I knew we had a car capable of being up front. We got to fourth pretty quick. As our fuel load started burning off our car got better and better. I found myself in position to win late in the race. The breaks just didn’t go my way. Wayne (Johnson) was really good and he earned it. In open race track we were pretty equal. When we got to traffic I’d bring him in really quick. We just never got in traffic long enough. I can’t say I would have won the race if we were in traffic, but I would have had more opportunities.”
Bergman ended with a runner-up result.
He is slated to return to ASCS National Tour competition this Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, and Saturday at Bronco Raceway Park in Cleveland, Texas.
