Inside Line Promotions – FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 16, 2014) – Seth Bergman overcame a slow start to last weekend by recording his 10th win of the season.
Bergman maneuvered from sixth to garner the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour triumph at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday.
“We got a good draw and things seemed to go our way,” he said. “We were fast all night. It didn’t seem like it could go any better for us.”
Bergman opened the night by winning his heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That earned him a spot in the feature redraw and he pulled the No. 6 in the random draw to line up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“Sam Hafertepe Jr. had got a good start to that race and he was gone,” he said. “I had to run him down in clean track. I erased a pretty big deficit. My race car was just as good in the rubber as in the slick.”
Bergman powered into the runner-up position during the first half of the 30-lap feature before he began to reel in Hafertepe Jr. for the lead.
“The last portion of the race the rubber came,” Bergman said. “We didn’t set up for the rubber. I got everybody but Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) before the rubber came and I was able to find it before he did. Our race car was flawless in the main event.”
After taking the lead on Lap 17, Bergman built a 4.933 second advantage before there was a caution with approximately six laps remaining. He then pulled away to a 3.378 second lead before a caution with two laps to go. Bergman’s strong run continued on the final restart as he won the race by nearly two seconds and his fastest lap was the final one of the feature.
It was a great turnaround following the start of the weekend on Friday, when Bergman lined up on the outside of the fourth row of his heat race.
“The draw works that way sometimes,” he said. “I think if we were a little better with our race car we could have done something more with that draw. The track was tough to pass on. That didn’t help. I think it was a mixture of not being where we needed to be and dealing with the tough draw and track conditions.”
Bergman finished sixth in his heat race, which relegated him to a B Main. He then advanced from fifth to second place in the consolation race to earn a transfer into the main event, which he started 19th.
“We got better and better as the night went on,” he said. “We didn’t start out where we wanted to be. We kept working toward it. By the feature we were pretty good. Then I got over the cushion on a late restart and bicycled the car. That cost me four or five spots.”
Bergman ended 11th in the main event.
He will compete this Friday and Saturday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour for the Midwest Fall Brawl. If any driver sweeps the weekend he or she will receive a $50,000 bonus.
“We’re rolling pretty good right now,” he said. “We’ve won a race the last three weekends in a row. We’re confident. There are a few drivers who have a shot at winning the bonus and I think we’re one of them.”
